Signing with ID Austria: How to Sign Online at QES Level

A step-by-step guide to signing with ID Austria online at qualified (QES) level, no card reader needed, using your smartphone and remote signing.

In short: Signing with ID Austria lets residents create a qualified electronic signature (QES) fully online, using the national eID on a smartphone. Because ID Austria is a notified electronic identification scheme, it can identify you securely and authorise remote signing without a card reader. The result is a QES with the same legal effect as a handwritten signature across the EU.

ID Austria is Austria's official digital identity, the successor to the mobile phone signature and the citizen card. For most people its most useful power is not just logging in to public services but signing documents at the highest legal level. Signing with ID Austria produces a qualified electronic signature under Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (eIDAS), which means the signed document is recognised across all EU member states. This guide walks through how it works, what you need, and when to use it.

What ID Austria is and how it enables a QES

ID Austria is an electronic identification means operated within Austria's eGovernment framework. It ties your verified identity to your smartphone, protected by a PIN and secure device binding. Because it provides a high level of assurance about who you are, it can authorise the creation of a qualified electronic signature held on a remote signature creation device operated by a qualified trust service provider. In other words, the eID handles secure identification and authorisation, while a QTSP holds the qualified certificate and performs the cryptographic signing on your behalf, under your sole control. This model has been the backbone of Austrian eGovernment for years, which is why signing with ID Austria is both widely accepted and straightforward for citizens to use.

Signing with ID Austria step by step

Once ID Austria is set up on your phone, signing a document online typically follows these steps:

  • Open the document in a web-based signing service and choose the qualified (QES) signature level.
  • Select ID Austria as your identification and signing method.
  • Authenticate on your smartphone with your PIN and the biometric unlock (fingerprint or face) your device uses.
  • Confirm exactly which document you are approving, the service shows what will be signed before you release the signature.
  • Approve the signing request; the qualified trust service provider applies your QES to the document.
  • Download the signed PDF, which now carries a PAdES qualified signature and, ideally, a qualified timestamp.

No card reader required: how remote signing works

Traditional qualified signing once meant a smart card and a dedicated reader. Signing with ID Austria removes that hardware. The signing key lives in a certified, tamper-resistant environment at the QTSP, and your authenticated approval from the ID Austria app is what unlocks a single signing operation. This is the essence of sole control in a remote setting: the provider can only sign when you personally authorise it. For you, the experience is simply a PIN and a fingerprint on a phone you already carry.

When to use signing with ID Austria

Reach for signing with ID Austria whenever a document needs the strongest legal footing: employment contracts, loan and account agreements, powers of attorney, official filings and any cross-border document that must be recognised throughout the EU. It is equally convenient for everyday agreements where you simply want certainty that the signature cannot be disputed. Because the QES is created remotely, it fits fully digital, paperless processes and works from anywhere you have your phone and an internet connection. For organisations, accepting documents signed this way means fewer paper steps, faster turnaround, and signatures whose validity can be checked automatically against the EU Trusted List.
