What is the EUDI Wallet and when is it coming?

The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a state-recognised digital wallet that every EU Member State must offer its citizens under the amending Regulation (EU) 2024/1183. It stores the electronic identity together with electronic attestations of attributes and allows them to be shared selectively.

Member States are expected to make wallets available from the end of 2026. For businesses the wallet is more than a digital ID card: it becomes a means of identification, a credential store and a signing tool at once — and therefore a central component of digital contracting processes.

Here's what the EUDI Wallet does:

  • Identification: Proves identity towards public authorities and businesses at a high level of assurance, mutually recognised across the EU.
  • Electronic attestations of attributes: Verifiable proof of individual characteristics — driving licence, diplomas, powers of representation or age of majority.
  • Selective disclosure: Users share specific attributes rather than exposing the full identity document.
  • Qualified signing: Wallet holders can sign at qualified level directly from the wallet, free of charge for private use.
  • Obligation to accept: Very large online platforms and heavily regulated sectors must accept the wallet as a means of identification.
  • User control: Every disclosure is authorised by the wallet holder; data sharing without consent is excluded by design.

What concerns businesses now:

  • Preparing identity journeys: Onboarding and contracting must be able to accept a wallet as an identity source, not only proprietary user accounts.
  • Falling in-house effort: Organisations accepting wallet identities can drop many of their own video identification journeys.
  • Architecture, not a project: From a process perspective the wallet is simply another identity source — anyone supporting eIDs today has already taken the step.

primesign is designed to support future eIDAS 2.0 wallets and already enables instant signing with eIDs today — with ID Austria and the German national ID card. That allows the wallet-ready architecture to be built before wallets are broadly available.

Benefits

  • A single EU-wide, state-verified identity basis
  • Own identification costs removed in many processes
  • Qualified signing with no certificate order required
  • Privacy-friendly selective disclosure of attributes
  • Lower abandonment through shorter identity checks
